Moon Chiropractic works with many sciatica patients here in our Coraopolis office, and quite a few of these men and women were nervous that they might require surgery to treat their pain. The most recent research shows that a large number of people don't need surgery for this prevalent issue, and that chiropractic care is more beneficial at clearing up sciatic nerve issues.
A typical surgery for sciatica is microdiscectomy, and in a 2010 study, researchers examined 80 individuals with sciatica who were referred for this procedure.
Forty patients were then randomly placed in one of two groups. The first group received surgical microdiscectomy and the second group received chiropractic treatment.
Both groups improved; however, no noticeable difference in results was recorded one year post-treatment between either group. In addition, about 60% of the participating patients who could not find assistance from any other treatment method "benefited from spinal manipulation to the same degree as if they underwent surgical intervention."
In other words, chiropractic adjustments offered the same positive benefits as surgery without needing to undergo the increased levels of surgery-based pain or suffer through lengthy recovery times often affiliated with that type of treatment option. Plus, you also don't run the risks associated with surgical microdiscectomy, such as nerve root damage, bowel or bladder incontinence, bleeding, or infection.
Surgery ought to be the last resort for sciatica pain. If you live in Coraopolis and you're suffering from back discomfort or sciatica, give Moon Chiropractic a call today at (724) 513-0521. We'll help pinpoint the origin of your discomfort and work hard to get you help and living pain free.
