Have Knee Pain? Chiropractic May Help

Moon Township natural knee knee pain treatmentKnee pain is a frequent problem for people in our Moon Township chiropractic office, and Dr. Spiropoulos has successfully provided many of these folks relief. This is mostly because chiropractic care has been found to help with many kinds of knee pain.

For instance, some people encounter pain in and around the knee area due to degenerative arthritis. Research has proven that this condition responds very well to chiropractic--and rather quickly, too. In fact, one study published in The Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association found that people with osteoarthritis in their knees felt significant pain relief and enhanced function after just two weeks of chiropractic care.

If your knee pain is due to a medial meniscus sprain, chiropractic could likely help with that as well. One case reported that integrating chiropractic with soft tissue treatment, rest, ice, and compression on the affected knee helped lower the intensity of the pain.

Clearly, sometimes a knee replacement surgery is required in order to rectify the problem, and if that's the case, chiropractic care can also help improve the outcome. How?

Medical research has found that people with low back pain often have less positive results after knee surgery. Therefore, dealing with your back pain through chiropractic before having a total knee arthroplasty can help with your post-surgery recovery.

No matter what your knee issue, Dr. Spiropoulos can likely help. Call our Moon Township practice today and find out what we can do for you!

Moon Township Chiropractic Effective for Cervicogenic Headache

We see a great number of individuals with headaches in our Moon Township office, and Dr. Spiropoulos has been able to provide relief for many of them. For that matter, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that 50 percent of all adults deal with some kind of headache problem, so this actually isn’t shocking. One of the most prevalent sorts of headaches which our patients are afflicted with is cervicogenic headache which, luckily for us, chiropractic can commonly help.

Cervicogenic Headaches Explained

A cervicogenic headache is one that starts from problems in the cervical spine. It might be caused by an issue with either the spine itself (specifically, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it can be because of a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This problem in your spine leads to squeezing or irritation of the spinal nerves, which can bring on headache pain.

How can you recognize if the headache you are being affected by is a cervicogenic headache? Apart from getting a diagnosis from a healthcare expert, a typical symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or discomfort in your neck. This is occasionally associated with pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.

How Chiropractic Helps with Cervicogenic Headaches

Seeing that cervicogenic headaches will not go away until whatever problem is inducing them is corrected, it is essential to receive treatment as opposed to just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an excellent approach, and one that provides a considerable amount of relief.

In one study reported in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, researchers evaluated 80 people who had repeated cervicogenic headaches. Half received chiropractic care and the other half engaged in light massage therapy. Each participant was assessed 12 and 24 weeks after the treatment and it was discovered that chiropractic provided the optimum results.

In particular, this study revealed that chiropractic adjustments provided patients more significant pain relief and lowered the frequency of headaches that occurred. Additionally, it also diminished the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.

Chiropractic Aids Sprained Ankle Recovery

Moon Township natural ankle sprain treatmentWe see many patients in our Moon Township office with ankle sprains but Dr. Spiropoulos has had a lot of success helping them heal more quickly. Why are ankle sprains so common and how can chiropractic care help?

According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), approximately 25,000 men and women in the US sprain their ankles every day. As a matter of fact, these injuries make up almost half of all sports injuries, causing people to spend time away from the activities they enjoy most.

Like any injury, there are many causes of ankle sprains. The most common is inversion, or when the ankle rolls inward. This injury can occur due to one forceful movement, or it can develop over a period of time, and exercises that increase the risk for this type of ankle sprain include running and jumping. You're also at risk if you have previous ankle injuries, poor posture or balance, weak muscles, and reduced range of motion.

How Can Chiropractic Treatments and Dr. Spiropoulos Help?

A paper printed in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics set out to discover chiropractic's role when it comes to ankle sprain recovery. The authors recruited 33 individuals between the ages of 18 and 45 who had a history of ankle inversion sprains, who were experiencing tenderness and/or pain, and had not re-injured the ankle in the previous six weeks.

Eighteen of the participants were assigned to participate in rehabilitation and the remaining 15 people received chiropractic in addition to rehab. Each individual had five full weeks of therapy, with the rehabilitation group receiving treatment seven days a week and the rehab plus chiropractic group receiving therapy six out of the seven days.

Research Supports Chiropractic Helps With Ankle Sprains

The authors found that the individuals who participated in both rehab and chiropractic fared the best at the 4-week mark when it came to pain and joint restriction. Furthermore, no negative effects were reported, showing that chiropractic is safe.

Chiropractic Care Effective for Herniated Disc Problems

Moon Township chiropractic disc herniation treatmentRegrettably, a large number of our Moon Township patients are familiar with the pain caused by a herniated disc all too well. On a positive note, Dr. Spiropoulos has helped many people with disc pain, and a number of scientific studies have confirmed that chiropractic care can help patients recover from this kind of problem.

Research on Herniated Discs and Chiropractic

In one study, a group of doctors from Switzerland recruited 148 patients who were suffering with pain in their lower back and legs due to a disc herniation (which was confirmed through magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI). Each individual then received chiropractic adjustments that focused on the location of his or her disc herniation.

Results were obtained after the first treatment session at set intervals--namely, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year--to ascertain what kind of short-term and long-term effects, if any, chiropractic care offers when it comes to resolving this particular condition. Among the information gathered was the person's self-reported changes in both back and leg pain.

The authors found that, as a whole, the study participants reported "significant improvement" for both types of pain every time the results were collected. In fact, over 90% of the patients claimed that their pain "improved" within the first three months, with 88% still citing improvement one year after their first treatment session.

Even those test subjects who were defined as "chronic" still reported an improvement in pain at a rate of 89% one year beyond when treatment first began. This is the same positive result that was found in the following case study.

Disc Herniation and Chiropractic: A Case Study

In this paper, a 26-year-old man had presented with disc herniation symptoms such as pain in the lower back, left leg, and left groin area, along with left foot drop and muscle weakness. He had endured these issues for more than two years after sustaining a sports injury, and his disc herniation was confirmed via MRI.

After receiving chiropractic, "The patient responded favorably and his multi-symptom complex resolved within 90 days of treatment." Furthermore, the patient was still enjoying relief one year after the chiropractic intervention.

Studies like these show how beneficial chiropractic can be when it comes to alleviating herniated disc pain and treating the symptoms they cause. So, if you are suffering from back pain caused by a herniated disc and want to find some relief, chiropractic might be an effective solution.

Chiropractic Helps People Avoid Back Surgery

Moon Township chiropractic back pain treatmentIn our Moon Township practice, we see many patients who are struggling with back pain, and a few of these patients have been advised they might need surgery to recover. Fortunately, Dr. Spiropoulos has helped many people get relief without the need for any type of operation. The scientific literature agrees with the results we see in our office. One research study published in the journal Spine found that consulting with a chiropractor as your first step in overcoming with your back problems may literally keep you out of the operating room.

In this study, medical researchers from Dartmouth analyzed statistics from about 1,900 workers from Washington state who first saw either a surgeon or a chiropractor for their back pain issues. They then examined three years' worth of follow-up medical records to find out whether the subjects wound up having back surgery in an attempt to treat the issue.

What the researchers observed was that about 43% of the people who first saw a surgeon for their back pain ended up having a surgical procedure in that 3-year time span, whereas only 1.5 percent of those who first saw a chiropractor had the same fate. The authors wrote:

"Even after controlling for injury severity and other measures, workers with an initial visit for the injury to a surgeon had almost nine times the odds of receiving lumbar spine surgery compared to those seeing primary care providers, whereas workers whose first visit was to a chiropractor had significantly lower odds of surgery."

These are impressive outcomes. Visiting a chiropractor dramatically reduces your odds of getting back surgery, plus the chiropractic patients in this study "had lower odds of chronic work disability" and they also had fewer expensive MRI tests.

Let's also consider this important detail: this study was conducted by orthopedic surgeons from Dartmouth College, and published in the world's most influential medical publication on spinal injury.

The Risks of Surgery

Any surgical procedure has risks, but a serious downside associated with spine surgery is that there's a very high failure rate. In an important review in the European Spine Journal, researchers wrote:

"Failed back surgery is a problem that has become sufficiently widespread to even warrant its own special conferences, with recent reviews reporting failure rates ranging from 5 to 50%."

The authors of this same study concluded:

"It is extremely difficult to identify unequivocal predictor factors that can be used to accurately predict the outcome of surgery."

As a chiropractor, Dr. Spiropoulos is convinced that surgery should be the absolute last choice for treating back pain. Chiropractic care works to restore your spine to its normal function--without risky surgery or drugs--and many research studies have confirmed the effectiveness of chiropractic for back pain.

Moon Township Auto Injury and Chronic Pain

Moon Township auto injury pain treatmentIf you live in Moon Township and you've been in a car crash, you have to know that you don't have to suffer from chronic pain.

Research Supports Chiropractic Helps With Chronic Pain after an Auto Injury

We deal with several auto injury patients in our Moon Township office, and many of these individuals are suffering from chronic pain caused by an old crash. As a matter of fact, research shows that a significant percentage of rear-end crashes result in pain and disability even ten years after the initial trauma.

Dr. Spiropoulos is here to help you avoid developing chronic pain by helping to restore the natural function of your spine soon after a motor vehicle accident.

The most frequent causes of chronic pain are reduced mobility of your spine and the formation of scar tissue in your spine. The ligaments of your neck and back can easily be damaged during a collision, and chiropractic works by decreasing inflammation and restoring normal motion.

Moon Township Chiropractic Auto Injury Treatment

Moon Township auto injury recovery and treatment by Dr. SpiropoulosEach year, there are millions of auto accidents in the world, and a significant number of people get hurt in a collision. Although most collisions are "minor," chronic spine pain are still common health issues. The good news is that chiropractic is a very good way to correct these kinds of injuries.

We have helped many auto collision patients in our Moon Township office, and Dr. Spiropoulos has been treating people with these types of problems since 2010. During a car wreck, your body is exposed to powerful forces that it simply wasn't built to deal with. These forces place strain and stress on your neck, shoulder, and back, and can cause damage to the ligaments that hold your neck and back together. A collision can trigger a vast array of pain problems.

A ligament tear in the neck can trigger pain, swelling, and radicular problems in the arm and hand. Chiropractic works well for these types of problems, because chiropractic concentrates on restoring the healthy function and flexibility of the injured tissues.

Moon Township TMJ Pain and Auto Injury

Moon Township TMJ Treatment by Dr. SpiropoulosJaw or TMJ pain is a fairly typical problem experienced by many people after a car wreck, and it can be tough for some health practitioners to identify the cause of the problem. Complicating the issue, oftentimes you won't experience TMJ pain until many weeks or months after a crash.

Dr. Spiropoulos has treated many men and women with jaw pain after an injury, and the medical literature explains what produces these types of symptoms. During a crash, the tissues in your spine are oftentimes stretched or torn, causing ligament, muscle, or nerve damage. This can obviously cause pain in the neck and back, but since your nervous system is one functioning unit, irritation of the nerves can cause issues in other parts of your body.

For example, with radicular pain, irritation of a nerve can cause prickling or pins and needles in the arm or hand. Similarly, it can affect parts of your body above the injured area, like your head and jaw. Headaches after a collision are very common because of neck injury, and the jaw works the same way. Dr. Spiropoulos sees this very frequently in our Moon Township office.

Research Shows Chiropractic Helps TMJ Pain After an Auto Injury

Research shows that the source of many jaw or TMJ symptoms originates in the cervical spine and that treatment of the underlying neck injury can fix the secondary headaches or jaw symptoms. The key to dealing with these symptoms is simple: Dr. Spiropoulos will work to return your spinal column back to health, alleviating the inflammatory reaction, treating the injured areas, and eliminating the irritation to the nerves in your spine.

Dr. Spiropoulos has found that jaw and headache issues often resolve once we restore your spine to its healthy condition.

Causes of Chronic Pain after a Car Crash

Moon Township auto injury treatmentOf the roughly 2 million rear-end collisions in the United States every year, a substantial number of people find themselves dealing with long-term pain and disability. Some research indicates that 1 out of 5 people are still in pain 12 months after a collision.

Dr. Spiropoulos sees many car crash patients in our Moon Township office, and we oftentimes see individuals who have been hurting for many years and have not been able to find relief. Dr. Spiropoulos has great success in helping these patients.

The Cause of Chronic Pain

During a collision, the tissues of your spinal column can be stretched or torn. The damaged area becomes swollen and irritated and transmits pain impulses to the spinal cord and brain.

Pain tells your nervous system that something is wrong, which tells the muscle tissues in the injured area to contract to shield the area from further harm.

If the damage isn't treated right away, a negative cycle develops. The damaged tissues keep sending pain signals and each time, your central nervous system reacts. This brings about a feedback loop in your nervous system that specialists refer to as "central sensitization." Your nervous system actually becomes hypersensitive to any kind of stimulus, producing chronic pain.

Dr. Spiropoulos is able to help this kind of condition, as chiropractic is a proven way to restore the nervous system's healthy functioning. Research shows that chiropractic is successful at reducing pain from auto injuries and shows that chiropractic in fact has positive effects on the pain centers of the brain.

Moon Township Cervicogenic Headache Treatment

Moon Township headache care by Dr. SpiropoulosWe know how difficult chronic headache pain can be. Dr. Spiropoulos and our staff have worked with many people in our Moon Township chiropractic clinic, and we've had great success in helping people eliminate their headache pain.

A 2016 research paper verifies what we see in our practice. In this study, the authors started with 110 people who were suffering with headaches that originated in the cervical spine. 58 of these patients were given a series of neck adjustments; 52 were given some stretches and exercises. The treatment period for both groups was four weeks.

The study found that the patients who received cervical and thoracic spinal adjustments "experienced significantly greater reductions in headache intensity, disability, headache frequency, headache duration, and medication intake as compared to the group that received mobilization and exercise."

The study also found that these results were maintained at the three-month follow-up exam.
