If you suffer from shoulder pain after a car crash, don't despair. Dr. Spiropoulos sees this type of condition often in our Moon Township office. Let's take a look at why shoulder pain is frequently experienced after an auto injury and see how chiropractic care can help you get better.
There are at least two ways that you can get shoulder pain after a crash: by direct injury to the shoulder or by referred pain from the neck.
Direct injury can be caused by striking your shoulder on a hard surface in the car during the impact, or can occur if you have a tight grip on the steering wheel during a rear end impact. With this type of trauma, you'll usually be aware of the pain shortly after the wreck.
More commonly, Dr. Spiropoulos finds that shoulder or arm pain does not immediately appear after a collision, but starts a few days or weeks after the accident. This type of shoulder discomfort actually starts in the cervical spine. Injured ligaments or muscles in your neck can pinch nerves in your neck, causing numbness, tingling, or soreness in your shoulder, elbow, or wrist.
We've treated many types of shoulder pain in our Moon Township office. This treatment involves chiropractic adjustments to restore your spine's natural mobility and home exercises that strengthen your neck and shoulder.
Let us help you recover from shoulder pain. Dr. Spiropoulos has helped many patients with the same problem, and we can probably help you, too. Dr. Spiropoulos will first determine what's causing your pain and then work to restore your body to its natural functioning. Ready to make an appointment? We care for a large number of people in our Moon Township office, and Dr. Spiropoulos has helped many people manage a wide array of health problems. Even so, the primary concern that seems to stop some folks from getting treatment is whether or not chiropractic care is safe. Well, according to three different studies (out of countless on the issue), the answer to this question is a clear: "Yes! Chiropractic is safe!"
Chiropractic is Safe, According to Australian Study
The first study(1) was published in Spine and involved 183 women and men. Each individual was suffering from spine-related pain, and half of the patients received real chiropractic adjustments whereas the remaining patients were given two fake chiropractic adjustments. Data was collected after each real or fake adjustment to discover if any undesirable negative effects occurred as a result of the real chiropractic adjustments.
Researchers found that no one documented any serious unfavorable adverse reactions in any way after getting one or two sessions of chiropractic. Some individuals did state that they got a headache (9% of patients) or muscle stiffness (about 1 out of 3) after treatment, but the effects were not serious.
Nationwide Survey Confirms that Chiropractic Care is Safe
The next research study(2), also published in the prestigious medical journal, Spine, was conducted in an effort to determine the safety of chiropractic. The test group was much larger -- 20,000 patients. Each participant received chiropractic adjustments of the neck, with over 50,000 total adjustments for all patients.
Once again, the experts discovered no serious negative side effects. The authors computed the risk of total adverse reactions to be approximately 6 out of every 10,000 consultations or every 100,000 treatment sessions. And, just as with the first study, some participants did report non-serious, milder, unwanted effects such as dizziness (about 1.6%) or a headache (4%), and this prompted the researchers to determine that "the risk of a serious adverse event, immediately or up to 7 days after treatment, was low to very low."
Chiropractic Adjustments are Safe for Children
This third study(3) is different from the first two reports, as it concentrates on the safety of chiropractic care for children. In this article, the researchers analyzed data reported by both chiropractors and parents involving 816 children who participated in 7,173 chiropractic adjustments.
Out of 5,438 chiropractic visits made for the children, chiropractors responding to the survey reported only three cases where there were adverse side effects. When parents were surveyed, they indicated only two adverse side effects out of 1,735 visits. Furthermore, both chiropractors and parents reported "a high rate of improvement with respect to the children's presenting complaints."
Based on studies like these, chiropractic has been judged safe and effective for everyone. To learn what chiropractic can do for you, call our Moon Township office and make an appointment today at (724) 513-0521.

When you're trying to support your family, take care of your home, and pay all of your bills on time, every day at work counts. Work injuries can be a serious problem for many folks, and we see many of these types of injuries in our Moon Township office. Dr. Spiropoulos appreciates your situation and is here to help.
The advantages of chiropractic for work injuries are well-documented. A 2013 research paper involving over 600 adults who were troubled with either back or neck pain found that the people who didn't see a chiropractor missed work at twice the rate of those who were seeing a chiropractor.
So, why don't more people use Chiropractic Care?
According to the respondents in this study, two of the primary reasons were that they thought they needed a referral for chiropractic care (which is typically no longer true) and they overestimated the costs associated with chiropractic treatment sessions by almost 70 percent.
The truth is, chiropractic patients actually spend less on care than medical patients, plus they are less likely to use drugs for their symptoms.

As injury to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is frequently rather painful, we do our best to help our Moon Township patients find relief as quickly and effectively as possible. In fact, Dr. Spiropoulos will tell you that the medical research shows just how much chiropractic can help ease discomfort in the TMJ.
Research Supports Chiropractic Helps With TMJ Pain and Discomfort
For instance, a study published in Physiotherapy Theory and Practice included 15 people with temporomandibular disorders who were managed with neck adjustments, middle-back manipulation, and trigger point therapy via dry needling. Individuals were assessed prior to these treatments and at 15 days and two months post-treatment. The researchers reported positive outcomes such as reduced pain, greater jaw movement, and lower impairment at both follow-ups.
Another clinical study carried out a review of almost 800 papers involving manual and manipulative therapy for conditions such as TMJ and found similar results. They concluded that there is a "fair...level of evidence" that chiropractic care can help ease pain associated with jaw pain and other upper extremity disorders.
This is great news since the triggers of TMJ are largely unknown. While trauma to the jaw area can cause pain symptoms, there are other factors to consider as well, such as bruxism, arthritis, and clenching of the jaw due to stress.

We come across a good deal of sports injuries in our Moon Township clinic, and Dr. Spiropoulos is generally able to assist these athletes. Stanford Children’s Hospital reports that more than 3.5 million children of the ages 14 and below are injured each year while playing sports. Add that to the almost 2 million adults hurt each year while engaged in sports-related activities, as reported by statistics collected by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, and you can begin to see the importance of preventing these sorts of widespread injuries. One way to possible achieve that goal, according to a study published in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, is to receive regular chiropractic care.
In Australian Rules football, hamstring and other leg traumas are commonplace, often sidelining the players and affecting their team's chance at winning. One particular study was administered using 59 semi-elite Australian Rules footballers to see whether chiropractic could cut down on these injuries and help keep them playing.
Research Shows Chiropractic Helps in Treating Sports Injuries
For this study specifically, every one of the participants received medical treatment. Additionally, half of them also engaged in chiropractic treatments at the rate of one treatment per week for the first six weeks, biweekly treatments for the next three months, and one treatment per month for the last 3 months of the study. The other group were given no chiropractic intervention whatsoever and were used as the control group to assess the benefits of chiropractic.
Following 24 matches, scientists noted a lessened number of lower limb muscle strains in the group that had been given chiropractic care. Moreover, that same group also missed fewer matches related to non-contact knee injuries. This lead the researchers to conclude that chiropractic should be made an addition to sports training programs to dramatically lessen the number of leg injuries.

According to experts, around 2-5 percent of the population will experience painful disorders like frozen shoulder syndrome at some point in their lives. That makes shoulder-related pain a common occurrence and one that Dr. Spiropoulos sees in our Moon Township practice on a regular basis.
Research Shows Chiropractic Helps With Shoulder Pain
In general, this ailment is more common for people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, and it tends to affect women more often than men. While ice, heat, and gentle stretching can often times help alleviate the pain, so too can chiropractic adjustments.
As an example, one study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine looked at 50 patients with frozen shoulder who were given chiropractic care. The duration of care varied from 11 days to 51 days, with 28 days being the average.
The researchers found that nearly all of the patients fared very well with chiropractic care. The study found:
8 of the subjects reported 50-75 percent improvement
25 indicated improvement ranging from 75- 90 percent
1 participant had complete resolution of their frozen shoulder pain
Only one participant reported an improvement of 50 percent or less, so studies like this demonstrate just how effective chiropractic can be when it comes to decreasing shoulder pain and increasing quality of life.

Dr. Spiropoulos works with many sciatica patients here in our Moon Township office, and quite a few of these individuals were nervous that they might need surgery to alleviate their pain. The most recent research indicates that many people don't require surgery for this widespread problem, and that chiropractic is more effective at clearing up sciatic nerve pain.
A typical surgery for sciatica is microdiscectomy, and in a 2010 study, specialists looked at 80 patients with sciatica who were referred for this operation.
Forty patients were then randomly sorted into one of two groups. The first group received surgical microdiscectomy and the second group was given chiropractic care.
Both groups got better; however, no noticeable difference in outcome was reported one year post-treatment between either group. Furthermore, around 60 percent of the participating subjects who could not find assistance from any other treatment approach "benefited from spinal manipulation to the same degree as if they underwent surgical intervention."
Put another way, chiropractic delivered the same positive advantages as surgery without needing to go through the greater levels of surgery-based pain or suffer through lengthy recovery times often associated with that particular treatment choice. Additionally, you also don't run the risks associated with surgical microdiscectomy, such as nerve root damage, bowel or bladder incontinence, bleeding, or infection.
Surgery should be the last resort for sciatica pain. If you live in Moon Township and you're being affected by back pain or sciatica, give Dr. Spiropoulos a call today at (724) 513-0521. We'll help determine the start of your pain and work hard to get you relief.

According to The American Academy of Pain Medicine, more people in the US suffer with chronic pain than diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and cancer combined. On top of that, neck pain is the third most documented type of pain, beat out only by back problems and headache.
Not surprisingly, many people come to our Moon Township office seeking neck pain treatment, and Dr. Spiropoulos has helped many of them find relief. This is a smart decision, as some research shows that over 90 percent of neck pain patients improve with chiropractic.
Studies Confirm Chiropractic's Positive Effects
A report published in The Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy involved 64 individuals who were suffering with neck pain. Around half were placed in an experimental group and the other half were designated to a comparison group. Both received chiropractic adjustments of the neck as well as a home exercise plan, while the experimental group also received adjustments of the thoracic spine.
Information was collected before treatment began and one week after the adjustments. Researchers found that 94% of the experimental group reported "significantly greater improvements" in regard to pain and disability in their neck symptoms. Just 35% of the patients who received neck adjustments showed the same level of improvement, showing that thinking about the entire spine is an important part of restoring the body's normal function.
Yet another study posted in Physical Therapy involved 60 individuals between the ages of 18 and 60 who reported suffering with neck pain. Each person was randomly allocated to one of two groups--thoracic spine thrust manipulation or non-thrust manipulation--with follow-up exams occurring two and four days after the treatments.
Researchers discovered that the study patients who received the thrust manipulations (the same adjustments that provided such positive results in the first report) "experienced greater reductions in disability" than the patients who received the non-thrust adjustments. Their pain was lower as well, which shows that this type of technique offers many benefits.
Help After Failed Neck Surgery
Another study also found the same sort of positive results after thoracic adjustments in a patient who had a failed neck surgery. This specific case involved a 46-year-old patient who had recently had neck surgery but still experienced neck pain, headaches, pain in her elbow, and muscle fatigue.
The woman documented reduced pain in her neck and lower headache intensity, right after the first chiropractic treatment session. After six weeks of care, which involved chiropractic, exercise, and patient education, the patient still placed her pain at a zero on a scale of 1 to 10. Her neck disability improved as well, with a rating score that represented that it was a "great deal better."
It is studies like these that substantiate the advantages of chiropractic adjustments, even if you've already attempted medical procedures that didn't provide relief. So, if you are suffering with neck problems and would like to find a solution that has a high success rate, try chiropractic. It may just be the relief you're looking for.

With the Migraine Research Foundation reporting that migraine headaches affect 38 million people in the United States (more than diabetes and asthma put together), it's no surprise that Dr. Spiropoulos sees a lot of headache patients in our Moon Township office. Although some people try to relieve migraine pain with drugs, chiropractic care is a terrific, all-natural approach that usually provides positive results.
Research Supports Chiropractic Care Helps With Migraines
For example, one report published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics involved 127 people ranging in age from 10 to 70-years-old who struggled with frequent (at least monthly) migraines. Each subject received up to 16 chiropractic sessions. The subjects noted that their headache frequency, duration, and disability two months before the study began, during the duration of the sessions (which was two months), and two months post-treatment.
What the researchers discovered is that chiropractic adjustments reduced the frequency, duration, and disability of the migraine pain when compared with the control group who didn't receive chiropractic. Furthermore, this enabled them to take less medication for the pain, providing them an all-natural solution for a chronic problem.
Another article found that a combination of chiropractic and neck massage reduced migraine pain almost 68%.

Knee pain is a frequent problem for people in our Moon Township chiropractic office, and Dr. Spiropoulos has successfully provided many of these folks relief. This is mostly because chiropractic care has been found to help with many kinds of knee pain.
For instance, some people encounter pain in and around the knee area due to degenerative arthritis. Research has proven that this condition responds very well to chiropractic--and rather quickly, too. In fact, one study published in The Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association found that people with osteoarthritis in their knees felt significant pain relief and enhanced function after just two weeks of chiropractic care.
If your knee pain is due to a medial meniscus sprain, chiropractic could likely help with that as well. One case reported that integrating chiropractic with soft tissue treatment, rest, ice, and compression on the affected knee helped lower the intensity of the pain.
Clearly, sometimes a knee replacement surgery is required in order to rectify the problem, and if that's the case, chiropractic care can also help improve the outcome. How?
Medical research has found that people with low back pain often have less positive results after knee surgery. Therefore, dealing with your back pain through chiropractic before having a total knee arthroplasty can help with your post-surgery recovery.
No matter what your knee issue, Dr. Spiropoulos can likely help. Call our Moon Township practice today and find out what we can do for you!
