Headache and neck pain are common problems that affect millions of people around the world. If you are suffering from this type of issue, you're not alone. The good news is that chiropractic care is an excellent way to not only treat these common issues, but also help prevent future episodes.
Research Supports Chiropractic Helps With Neck Pain and Headaches
For many years, patients with neck and headache pain in Moon Township have been helped by the chiropractic care of Dr. Spiropoulos. Our success is backed up by a recent review done in Canada that found that non-surgical, non-drug solutions are the best choice for neck and headache pain.
The report looked at 15 studies from 1990 to 2015 and found that conservative treatment comprised of chiropractic adjustments, exercises, and stretches was recommended before resorting to drugs or more invasive procedures.
Past studies have shown that chiropractic is effective and safe for neck pain and many other health conditions.

There are many different kinds of headache, but one of the most common types is known as "cervicogenic headache," or headaches that start in your neck.
Dr. Spiropoulos sees a lot of people in our Moon Township office who are struggling with recurring headaches. Luckily, chiropractic adjustments can often help, potentially reducing these types of headaches by 50%, and research confirms it.
Research Proves Chiropractic Helps With Cervicogenic Headaches
A study was conducted involving 80 participants who reported experiencing at least five cervicogenic headaches during the prior three months. The goal was to see how effective chiropractic was for this type of head pain, as well as to determine the number of treatment sessions necessary to achieve a positive effect.
The individuals were split into four separate groups, so that each group was similar in age, gender, number of cervicogenic headaches, and their intensity. Of the four groups, two engaged in chiropractic treatments and two received light massage. Furthermore, one group assigned to each treatment received eight sessions and the other group received double that amount.
Each patient was assessed based on head pain, neck pain, and disability prior to the study and 12 and 24 weeks after treatment was complete. The authors found that those who received chiropractic as opposed to massage reported fewer headaches at the conclusion of the study. Furthermore, improvements were maintained when checked six months after treatment ended.
Furthermore, participants who were taking medications for their headaches were able to lower their intake after completing the study. Those who received chiropractic adjustments had lower drug usage 24 weeks post-study.

Dr. Spiropoulos sees many patients weekly in our busy Moon Township chiropractic office who are searching for relief from the pain and suffering they feel due to herniated discs. Our experience isn't unique; the medical research confirms that chiropractic is a great way to treat herniated disc problems.
Don't Suffer! Dr. Spiropoulos and Chiropractic Care Helps With Disc Herniation
One particular research project involved 27 people, 8 male and 19 female, who had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirming a disc herniation in either their neck or lower back. The subjects documented that they were experiencing pain, limited range of motion, and sensory problems bad enough to keep them off work.
During the course of the research study, the participants were managed using one of two common chiropractic methods: traction for herniated discs in the cervical area or flexion distraction for the people who had herniation issues in the lumbar area.
Each person was treated four or five times per week for the first two weeks, then three times weekly, and then as needed for the rest of the study. Based on the seriousness of the disc herniation, treatment varied anywhere from six weeks to six months, with MRIs being performed at various stages to identify what effect, if any, the chiropractic care was having in regard to the disc herniation.
Research Proves Chiropractic Helps With Back Pain and Herniated Disc
The investigators reported that 80 percent of the subjects obtained a "good clinical outcome," meaning reduced pain and a reduction in other symptoms, such as numbness. Additionally, 77 percent of these men and women also showed MRI evidence that their disc herniation was either reduced or resolved completely. This resulted in 78 percent of the study subjects being able to return to their place of work and led the authors to conclude that chiropractic care is both "safe and helpful" for disc herniations.

Chiropractic is based on the principle of enabling your body to naturally heal through spinal adjustments and lifestyle changes that encourage overall health. For Dr. Spiropoulos, this involves working to restore your body's healthy performance to prevent the need for medications or surgery. We notice that most of our Moon Township patients are pleased to find a natural approach for their health problems.
One advantage of chiropractic is that it helps people minimize or even eliminate the use of drugs. Medications are frequently supplied to patients who have back problems. This is such a significant crisis that the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) issued a news release stating that opioid (painkiller) risks outweigh the advantages when prescribed for back pain.
Some of the most popular opiates, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, include hydrocodone (Vicodin), oxycodone (OxyContin and Percocet), morphine, and codeine. Numbers presented by the AAN mention the fact that roughly 50% of the people taking these types of substances for a period of three months are still dependent on them five years later. This can further complicate the difficulty of back pain and recovery, particularly if an opiate addiction occurs.
Contrast that to chiropractic care which engages natural healing and the benefits are obvious. While a pill might be helpful at temporarily relieving the discomfort of a health issue, it's not a solution to the problem. A drug won't fix your damaged spine; it will only mask the pain.
Dr. Spiropoulos will first examine you to get to the source of your back pain and then work with you to eliminate the problem -- without risky medications.
If you're ready for relief, naturally, give our Moon Township office a call at (724) 513-0521 to make an appointment with Dr. Spiropoulos.

If you suffer from shoulder pain after a car crash, don't despair. Dr. Spiropoulos sees this type of condition often in our Moon Township office. Let's take a look at why shoulder pain is frequently experienced after an auto injury and see how chiropractic care can help you get better.
There are at least two ways that you can get shoulder pain after a crash: by direct injury to the shoulder or by referred pain from the neck.
Direct injury can be caused by striking your shoulder on a hard surface in the car during the impact, or can occur if you have a tight grip on the steering wheel during a rear end impact. With this type of trauma, you'll usually be aware of the pain shortly after the wreck.
More commonly, Dr. Spiropoulos finds that shoulder or arm pain does not immediately appear after a collision, but starts a few days or weeks after the accident. This type of shoulder discomfort actually starts in the cervical spine. Injured ligaments or muscles in your neck can pinch nerves in your neck, causing numbness, tingling, or soreness in your shoulder, elbow, or wrist.
We've treated many types of shoulder pain in our Moon Township office. This treatment involves chiropractic adjustments to restore your spine's natural mobility and home exercises that strengthen your neck and shoulder.
Let us help you recover from shoulder pain. Dr. Spiropoulos has helped many patients with the same problem, and we can probably help you, too. Dr. Spiropoulos will first determine what's causing your pain and then work to restore your body to its natural functioning. Ready to make an appointment? We care for a large number of people in our Moon Township office, and Dr. Spiropoulos has helped many people manage a wide array of health problems. Even so, the primary concern that seems to stop some folks from getting treatment is whether or not chiropractic care is safe. Well, according to three different studies (out of countless on the issue), the answer to this question is a clear: "Yes! Chiropractic is safe!"
Chiropractic is Safe, According to Australian Study
The first study(1) was published in Spine and involved 183 women and men. Each individual was suffering from spine-related pain, and half of the patients received real chiropractic adjustments whereas the remaining patients were given two fake chiropractic adjustments. Data was collected after each real or fake adjustment to discover if any undesirable negative effects occurred as a result of the real chiropractic adjustments.
Researchers found that no one documented any serious unfavorable adverse reactions in any way after getting one or two sessions of chiropractic. Some individuals did state that they got a headache (9% of patients) or muscle stiffness (about 1 out of 3) after treatment, but the effects were not serious.
Nationwide Survey Confirms that Chiropractic Care is Safe
The next research study(2), also published in the prestigious medical journal, Spine, was conducted in an effort to determine the safety of chiropractic. The test group was much larger -- 20,000 patients. Each participant received chiropractic adjustments of the neck, with over 50,000 total adjustments for all patients.
Once again, the experts discovered no serious negative side effects. The authors computed the risk of total adverse reactions to be approximately 6 out of every 10,000 consultations or every 100,000 treatment sessions. And, just as with the first study, some participants did report non-serious, milder, unwanted effects such as dizziness (about 1.6%) or a headache (4%), and this prompted the researchers to determine that "the risk of a serious adverse event, immediately or up to 7 days after treatment, was low to very low."
Chiropractic Adjustments are Safe for Children
This third study(3) is different from the first two reports, as it concentrates on the safety of chiropractic care for children. In this article, the researchers analyzed data reported by both chiropractors and parents involving 816 children who participated in 7,173 chiropractic adjustments.
Out of 5,438 chiropractic visits made for the children, chiropractors responding to the survey reported only three cases where there were adverse side effects. When parents were surveyed, they indicated only two adverse side effects out of 1,735 visits. Furthermore, both chiropractors and parents reported "a high rate of improvement with respect to the children's presenting complaints."
Based on studies like these, chiropractic has been judged safe and effective for everyone. To learn what chiropractic can do for you, call our Moon Township office and make an appointment today at (724) 513-0521.

When you're trying to support your family, take care of your home, and pay all of your bills on time, every day at work counts. Work injuries can be a serious problem for many folks, and we see many of these types of injuries in our Moon Township office. Dr. Spiropoulos appreciates your situation and is here to help.
The advantages of chiropractic for work injuries are well-documented. A 2013 research paper involving over 600 adults who were troubled with either back or neck pain found that the people who didn't see a chiropractor missed work at twice the rate of those who were seeing a chiropractor.
So, why don't more people use Chiropractic Care?
According to the respondents in this study, two of the primary reasons were that they thought they needed a referral for chiropractic care (which is typically no longer true) and they overestimated the costs associated with chiropractic treatment sessions by almost 70 percent.
The truth is, chiropractic patients actually spend less on care than medical patients, plus they are less likely to use drugs for their symptoms.

As injury to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is frequently rather painful, we do our best to help our Moon Township patients find relief as quickly and effectively as possible. In fact, Dr. Spiropoulos will tell you that the medical research shows just how much chiropractic can help ease discomfort in the TMJ.
Research Supports Chiropractic Helps With TMJ Pain and Discomfort
For instance, a study published in Physiotherapy Theory and Practice included 15 people with temporomandibular disorders who were managed with neck adjustments, middle-back manipulation, and trigger point therapy via dry needling. Individuals were assessed prior to these treatments and at 15 days and two months post-treatment. The researchers reported positive outcomes such as reduced pain, greater jaw movement, and lower impairment at both follow-ups.
Another clinical study carried out a review of almost 800 papers involving manual and manipulative therapy for conditions such as TMJ and found similar results. They concluded that there is a "fair...level of evidence" that chiropractic care can help ease pain associated with jaw pain and other upper extremity disorders.
This is great news since the triggers of TMJ are largely unknown. While trauma to the jaw area can cause pain symptoms, there are other factors to consider as well, such as bruxism, arthritis, and clenching of the jaw due to stress.

We come across a good deal of sports injuries in our Moon Township clinic, and Dr. Spiropoulos is generally able to assist these athletes. Stanford Children’s Hospital reports that more than 3.5 million children of the ages 14 and below are injured each year while playing sports. Add that to the almost 2 million adults hurt each year while engaged in sports-related activities, as reported by statistics collected by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, and you can begin to see the importance of preventing these sorts of widespread injuries. One way to possible achieve that goal, according to a study published in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, is to receive regular chiropractic care.
In Australian Rules football, hamstring and other leg traumas are commonplace, often sidelining the players and affecting their team's chance at winning. One particular study was administered using 59 semi-elite Australian Rules footballers to see whether chiropractic could cut down on these injuries and help keep them playing.
Research Shows Chiropractic Helps in Treating Sports Injuries
For this study specifically, every one of the participants received medical treatment. Additionally, half of them also engaged in chiropractic treatments at the rate of one treatment per week for the first six weeks, biweekly treatments for the next three months, and one treatment per month for the last 3 months of the study. The other group were given no chiropractic intervention whatsoever and were used as the control group to assess the benefits of chiropractic.
Following 24 matches, scientists noted a lessened number of lower limb muscle strains in the group that had been given chiropractic care. Moreover, that same group also missed fewer matches related to non-contact knee injuries. This lead the researchers to conclude that chiropractic should be made an addition to sports training programs to dramatically lessen the number of leg injuries.

According to experts, around 2-5 percent of the population will experience painful disorders like frozen shoulder syndrome at some point in their lives. That makes shoulder-related pain a common occurrence and one that Dr. Spiropoulos sees in our Moon Township practice on a regular basis.
Research Shows Chiropractic Helps With Shoulder Pain
In general, this ailment is more common for people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, and it tends to affect women more often than men. While ice, heat, and gentle stretching can often times help alleviate the pain, so too can chiropractic adjustments.
As an example, one study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine looked at 50 patients with frozen shoulder who were given chiropractic care. The duration of care varied from 11 days to 51 days, with 28 days being the average.
The researchers found that nearly all of the patients fared very well with chiropractic care. The study found:
8 of the subjects reported 50-75 percent improvement
25 indicated improvement ranging from 75- 90 percent
1 participant had complete resolution of their frozen shoulder pain
Only one participant reported an improvement of 50 percent or less, so studies like this demonstrate just how effective chiropractic can be when it comes to decreasing shoulder pain and increasing quality of life.
